The customs of Australia

As a country Australia has a lot of different traditions that differs from our established customs in the country, thanks to the page http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/resources/global-etiquette/australia.html, here´s a list of most common Australians customs and etiquette in the local social enviroment.

Meeting Etiquette
Australians are not very formal so greetings are casual and relaxed; regardless, they are part of the Commonwealth where people tends to be very formal. However, like in any country,  this friendly greeting can even be used with unknown visitors. Also, a handshake and smile  is suffice, as if you are greeting a friend you haven´t seen in a while. Some Australian´s may say, 'G'day' or 'G'day, mate', this may sound patronizing from a foreigner; likewise, visitors might say, 'Hello' or 'Hello, how are you?'. In addition, using the persons first name instead of a nickname can help to show some  formal way of greeting. Whereas, Mexicans have some similars ways of greeting, it is the same unformal context; however, in Mexíco they tend to use nicknames instead of the first name, also the pysichal greeting is a little bit different, while in Australia the have a handshake and a smile, Mexícan people tend to high five then a connection of fist, Mexicans tend to meet people with a "whats up dude" and their use it with known persons and complete strangers. so at the end both countries have a simliar ways of greeting, but with their onw variations of them

Gift Giving Etiquette
On some celebrations such as Christmas and birthdays, small gifts are usually exchanged between family members, close friends, and neighbours, the objects normally used a  gift can be from a small amount of cash, a bottle of wine or a six-pack of beer!
If you are invited to someones home for dinner, it is polite to bring a gift for the host like a package of chocolates or flowers. Although, a good quality bottle of wine is always appreciated, Australians have the custom that the gifts are opened when received, so don´t think its rude when someone quickly opens a gift you just handed. Again there is a similar reltaionship in the gift giving in Mexico. However they depend on wich kind of people are you visiting, people from rural areas tend to give food or live animals, since they tend to raise them, on the other hand people from urban areas like to recieve gifts depending on their social situation, the gifts can vary from some candies, handicraft, electronic devices or even a good book.

Dining Etiquette

Many invitations to an Aussies home will be for a 'barbie' (BBQ) so its recommended to go with an empty stomach and the mood to spend some good time with your friends, Usually the guests to a barbeque tend to bring wine or beer for their personal consumption. and even In some situations, very informal barbecues host may suggest that you bring your own meat! Also, it is suggested to arrive on time if invited to dinner; trying to not arrive more than 15 minutes late if you are invited to a barbeque or a large party. Another way of bettering relationships with people is by contacting the hostess ahead of time and asking if she would like you to bring a dish to make the meal more enjoyable. At  the end one should offer to help the hostess with the preparation or clearing up after a meal. Now this shows that the countries have similar customs, but with their variations, for example Mexican barbecues. However in Mexico the guest tend to bring whine for the whole barbeque, even in large quantities!, also the time of arrival, in Mexico people tend to arrive at the time when they have free time, meaning that they can be on time or three hours late!, host will always have food for its guess; however, it is recommended that you bring some food to enjoy the evening.

Watch your table manners!

As any other culture, table manners are essential, during dinner its recommended to hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right while eating, to indicate that you have finished eating, put your knife and fork parallel on your plate with the handles facing to the right. In addition always try to keep your elbows off the table and your hands above the table when eating.

This list give us an idea of how the customs differ from one country to another. However it also show its similarities, even thought they are thousands of miles away
